When paris was renovated during the nineteenth century, architects and city planners were running out of room to build new buildings and boulevards. To find this room, they had to build over cemetary land. What were they to do with all these bones? There are many abandoned underground quarries that Parisians mined during the Middle Ages. Because of this, there are dozens of miles of tunnels and mineshafts under Paris. These tunnels became ossuaries for thousands of long-dead Parisians.
